VENTURER DESIGN BALI

Over the past decade our Design capability has grown from a firm producing only simple shop drawings to a fully functional independent design company located in beautiful Bali.

The company is staffed with Qualified Architects, Engineers and CAD Technicians.

Diversity of work is split into two main categories:

  TIMBER WORK DESIGN

Our Design Arm benefits from years of important practical knowledge gained across a variety of timber structure work projects.

A rich culture of timberwork is predominant in Bali and therefore makes perfect sense to locate our design hub there.

Current work includes numerous timber designs and detailing for Venturer and its partners’ commercial and Resort projects in the Maldives, Middle East and Singapore. (link venturer projects)

Modular timber design, such as interlocking decking, laminated beam technology, shingle roof systems and concealed connection systems are some examples of innovations developed in Bali.

  NATURE BASED DESIGN

Organic Design and Architecture with Nature as a basis dates back as far as the Pyramid builders.

For instance, the shell of the moon snail has been tested to withstand an incredible 2000 times its own weight. Whereas a typical house cannot even bear a fraction of its own weight.

Nature should be considered not just as our Design Partner but our Teacher.

We aim to conceive and design structures that are not only efficient in terms of design but encompass the whole spectrum of their environment and thereby impact upon it.

This includes minimising the footprint, ultimate orientation to enhance the benefits of the environment, and the negative effects of the structures presence.

Natural products including certified and reclaimed timber are our palette.

The structure is not considered as an object to be accommodated by the site, rather as germinated seed grown as a response to our requirements.

With this simple philosophy and reference to the many great organic Architects of our time, we are striving to understand and apply these principles within our own sphere of Design.

Shapes in Nature are determined by the forces that act upon them. Everything in Nature is determined by arcs and curves; from the movement of our planet around the sun, to the growth ring of a tree.

We are not seeking to emulate Nature literally, rather use it to explore design problems and solutions. In other words, seeking answers to “How would nature solve this problem?”

Our process of design begins with an intimate knowledge of the site, environment and local available resources.

This is coupled by the client’s requirements in terms of required spaces and their relationships with each other, including ambience, function, durability and preferences for colour and materials.

There is no preconceived notion of what the structure will be in terms of appearance and style. For instance the plan of the structure will influence the shape of the roof and not vise versa.

Man like Nature does not move about in 90 degree turns and therefore our structures are generally curved in terms of the flow from one space to another and the fabric of the structure that surrounds these spaces.

Ultimately as in nature we eliminate what is not needed thereby “Doing more with Less”.

  PROJECT STUDY

  LA MINDA

  OVERVIEW ^TOP

Our first fully conceived and designed project is currently in its final stages of design.

Our Client, an artist and adventure seeker, briefed us to conceive and design a place of retreat. Appearance was to be raw yet functional with an emphasis for the occupant to feel absorbed in the environment rather than the structure itself.

Hence we conceived his “La Minda” (the mind) project comprising of main house and isolated guest rooms with which can be operated independently of the main house.

The site consists of a ridge with sea views above fairly dense secondary forest and scrub.

The main house (some 450 m²) comprises of a large master bedroom with a 225 degree view at the highest point of the house taking in both sea views and that of the tropical environment.

On the second level, together with the master bedroom, is a modest guestroom cum study. Both with semi outdoor dry bathrooms.

Behind the accommodation is a large open entertainment and lounge area which flows out onto the second level of the three story observation tower.

Beyond the entertainment area is a void accommodating a conical staircase which spirals down to the main living and dining area.

Below the accommodation is a core containing the secure air conditioned control room; multi functional in terms of usage.

Set back behind the living space is the back of house containing large proportioned kitchen, modest staff quarters and storage area.

  NATURE INFLUENCE ^TOP

After linking space requirements with function and accessibility, a form started to evolve.

This is where our far more qualified Partner, Nature itself, presented us with possible design solutions.

We settled on the influence of the “Moon Snail Shell”. This allowed us to proportion spaces according to requirements without waste.

The organic shaped roof grows in terms of volume as it enlarges toward the key spaces.

There are few walls and very little joinery, allowing largely unrestricted airflow and light.

Walls and joinery are limited to air-conditioned spaces housed together in the masonry back bone of the structure.

From this core the large open sided shelter expands with minimal support as the core is integral to the whole structure, in essence mimicking the core of the moon snail shell.

Materials consist of Malaysian certified, reclaimed and plantation timber.

Trusses are braced and curved top chords formed with bamboo, lower levels and wet areas use tinted cement.

Roofing is local “attap” with secondary waterproofing achieved with a membrane which is insulated with bubble foil of the enclosed spaces.

The entire structure is designed to “breathe” prolonging the lifespan of the component materials.

Lastly power and waste management will be carefully considered minimising the need for fossil fuel, and allowing only “clean” waste into the environment.
